Putting It All Together
All skin is different but no matter your type or concern, at a bare minimum, your skin care routine should include 3 simple steps: cleanse, tone, moisturize. Additionally, you’ll want to exfoliate, nourish and treat as needed. Here are the products you need.
Cleanser - All skin needs to be cleansed at least once a day. Daily cleaning removes dirt, oil, makeup and dead skin cells that can accumulate on your face. If you have a combination or oily skin type or blemish prone skin you’ll want to cleanse twice a day morning and night. If your skin is dry or sensitive, once a day at night may be sufficient.
Toner - A toner is an extension of cleansing. It removes excess dirt, oil, makeup and dead skin cells that may have been left behind after cleansing. Toners also add hydration. Dry skin is especially dehydrated, but even if you have oily skin, you may still need water based hydration to achieve balance. Dehydrated skin can aggregate acne, irritation and make dullness and aging skin appear worse. Don’t skip the toner.
Moisturize - All skin needs moisture as the final step in your skin care regime. Moisturizers nourish and replenish the oils that you’ve washed away. Dry skin needs the most emollient moisturizers but don’t think that if you have oily or acneic skin that you can skip this step. Oily skin needs moisture too after cleansing. Without it, oily skin can rebel and produce even more sebum to compensate for a perceived moisture loss.
Exfoliate - Regular exfoliating is a must to remove dead skin cells. Exfoliating improves scared and blemish prone skin and should be a primary part of your natural skin care routine if these are your top skin care concerns. Use a mild exfoliator daily. If you have dry, aging or dull skin, exfoliating can help improve your appearance by removing the dead cells allowing new, fresher cells to come to the surface. Try exfoliating 2-3 times a week. Sensitive skin type should stick to once or twice a week to keep skin healthy. Exfoliating should be happen after toning, before moisturizing.
Nourish & Treat - Masks and serums are some of the best products for treating and nourishing your skin. Every skin type can benefit from masks and serums. Look for ingredients that address your skin care concerns and use these specialized products at least 2-3 times a week. After cleansing, toning and exfoliating, put on a serum first then use a mask.
To sum it all up: cleanse, tone, exfoliate, nourish, treat, moisturize. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing are the daily essentials while exfoliating, nourishing and treating can be done on as needed basis.
