Ingredient Spotlight: Papaya Skin Care Benefits

I love using fruits in our natural skin care products and papayas are one of my favs. Papaya or pawpaw is a bright, tropical fruit from the Carica Papaya tree native to Mexico and Central America. Papaya fruit has a rich, sweet flavor and is best known for its high Vitamin C content. It is also high in B vitamins, vitamin A, amino acids and enzymes like papain.

All of this nutritional value makes papaya a naturally effective skin care ingredient. We use powdered papaya extract in our Brightening Apple & Papaya Clay Face Mask. Add this fabulous extract to your custom face mask or mash a fresh papaya into pulp and apply it straight to your face to add a boost of antioxidants.

Properties and Benefits of Papaya Fruit Extract

Antioxidant Rich

Papaya is very rich in Vitamin A, B, C and carotenoids, antioxidants that help to fight off the appearance of aging and sun damage. Papaya helps your skin look more rejuvenated and tight. It also may have some anti-inflammatory benefits helping your skin look less irritated and red. It’s also great for fortifying hair.

Exfoliating and Brightening

Papaya is a natural alpha-hydroxy acid. It’s rich in an enzyme called papain. Papain is good at breaking down keratin proteins that hold together skin cells. Using products rich in papain can help to naturally exfoliate your skin by breaking up skin cells so they can be washed away, letting fresh cells emerge for a brighter, smoother complexion.

Who should use papaya for skin care? Dull, uneven and flaky skin will find products with papaya especially effective due to its brightening and exfoliating powers. Aging skin will appreciate the high antioxidant content. Since powdered papaya extract can be strong and acidic it’s not ideal for sensitive skin and best when used in masks and rinse off products.
